On the high peak of Serene sophisticated luxurious hill was built the adobe of God-one of the 11 churches of CMI fathers weaved into a texture of bricks which their inspired imaginative genius. So is the touch and sweated connection the CMI fathers have with the Chethipuzha Sacred Heart Church.
Even before our beloved Fr. Chavara Kuriakose adorned with the celestial eternal glory, the spade work of the Church with the Ashram was on the anvil in 1868 itself. It was after a long span of 12 years that the real construction of the church was initiated to begin.
With a view to instill spiritual animation in the spirited souls of the faithful between Changanacherry and Kanjirappally an ardent desire to establish a ´koventha´ was taken shape to this effect, a request was presented to the then Bishop and the Prior General by the Local Fathers and the Faithful in September in 1882.
The consecration of Kunanthanam Chapel as a spiritual center for the families of the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th wards under Chettipuzha Parish was held on May 1, 1978 on the feast day of Saint Joseph, the Labor Mediator. In the first period, Holy Communion was offered with special permission in connection with the feast days of the Mother, Saint Joseph the Father, and Saint Sebastian. Later permission was given to offer Mass every month. As a result of the efforts of Reverend Joseph Muttathachan, permission was obtained to offer the Holy Sacrifice on every Sunday and on the days of debt. Holy Communion is celebrated on Sundays at 7 am. In the year 2003-2004, Sunday classes were started for children from classes 1 to 3. A locally formed committee directs the day-to-day operations of the chapel.
Since February 2023, the holy mass has been celebrated every day. On July 16, 2023, the Koonanthanam Chapel Committee meeting held under the leadership of the vicar decided to renovate the chapel, conduct 1 hour Divine Liturgy on Tuesdays and appoint a church minister for the service in the chapel. Also, committee members were selected from wards 13 and 14. Now the Sunday school is conducted from classes 1 to 4.
